Taletool

Taletool is a CLI and Rust library for inspecting, unpacking, and packing the client data formats of NosTale, an MMORPG developed by Entwell and published by Gameforge. It covers nearly every file shipped with the game: sprites, textures, effects, geometry, maps, animations, language files, audio metadata, and even the original .PKG patch packages. Every supported format can be converted into something editable, such as PNG or JSON, and packed back into a file the game accepts.

The CLI is intentionally low-level. It exposes the underlying file-format operations without imposing a higher-level modding workflow, and mainly showcases what the libraries can do. The libraries themselves are meant to be the foundation for other tools, such as modding utilities and graphical editors.

Features

• Scanning: Classify every supported file in a client data directory, including audio and video detected from their header bytes.
• Archives: Inspect, extract, unpack, and pack binary and text .NOS archives as well as snd.pck.
• Graphics: Convert textures, mip levels, and sprites to and from PNG.
• Game data: Round-trip maps, geometry, effects, animations, height grids, and text payloads.
• Patches: Inspect and apply original .PKG patch packages.
• Automation: JSON output for inspection commands, making it easy to script.

Taletool is open source under the AGPL-3.0-or-later license and available on GitHub, where you can also find notes on each file format. It was released to the community on elitepvpers.
